Today is Human Rights Day, a day of observance that turns 70 years today! The Universal Declaration of Human Rights is considered the most translated document in the world with translations of 500 languages. Eleanor Roosevelt served as the chairperson of the drafting committee and was joined by other women, and together they secured the inclusion of women’s rights in the Universal Declarations.
It is therefore fitting that this week Lawyers Club has had much to celebrate because our commitment to feminism—to advance the status of women in the law and society—is palpable.
On December 8, 2020, California Governor Newsom appointed to the San Diego County Superior Court Lawyers Club members, Jinsook Ohta, also a board member until her day of appointment, and Jose Castillo, a President Circle supporter of Lawyers Club. Newsom also nominated Sustaining Member of Lawyers Club San Diego Superior Court Judge Truc T. Do to serve as an Associate Justice for the Fourth District Court of Appeal, making her the first Asian American Justice in the court’s history. All of this on the heels of Tim Nader, a Lawyers Club member and past board member, being elected to the San Diego Superior Court last month. We congratulate Castillo, Do, Nader and Ohta, and we have no doubt that they will be an asset to our local bench with their integrity, high intellect, diplomacy and commitment to fairness and justice for all.
The elevation of these Lawyers Club members is complimented by yesterday’s Fund for Justice Celebration. The Lawyers Club community rallied to raise— in less than one hour— over $17,000 of a $20,000 goal. This remarkable generosity is the reason our Fund for Justice continues to change the lives of many for the betterment of their inalienable human rights. This past year’s giving totaled $25,000 and we hope to continue to give this and even more next year. There is still time to make a difference to ensure that Lawyers Club continues to preserve woman rights as human rights. DONATE today and help us reach our $20,000 goal.
