Lawyers Club Blog (ARCHIVE)

Posted by: Maggie Schroedter on Sep 16, 2021

During the beginning of the pandemic in March 2020, we heard from many people about the challenges of working from home with their partners and spouses while also caring for children.  Our leaders encouraged everyone to quarantine with those “in your household.”  People who saw friends were criticized.

Although I empathized with those juggling working from home and family duties, and understood the societal need to quarantine, messages of support for people who lived alone were lacking.  I happened to live alone during that time, and, as many of you know, it was incredibly lonely and isolating.  It made me realize just how important in-person social interactions and human connections are to our overall emotional and physical health.

Last night, our Membership Development Committee hosted a New Member Mixer at the outdoor venue Quartyard, in the East Village, sponsored by Haight Brown & Bonesteel.  It was Lawyers Club’s first in-person mixer since Red White & Brew in March of 2020, and the remarkable energy derived from human connection radiated throughout the venue.  We reconnected with our members and met new ones.  I left the event feeling energized and excited for the year ahead.  Most of all, I felt grateful.  I was grateful that California has been guided by science, and I was able to be surrounded and supported by my friends and colleagues who are all passionately working together in our fight for equality.

I am excited to continue to connect with our members this year with a slate of virtual, in-person, and hybrid events.  Join us for the Diverse Women’s Committee’s “Discrimination Behind Bars” virtual MCLE sponsored by Rodriguez Law Offices on September 23, and the in-person, outdoor Fall Judicial Reception sponsored by Sheppard Mullin in November.
