Born in the mid-2010s, the “girlboss” was a female business leader, who shattered the glass ceiling despite years of underestimation. I did not think much of it—and admittedly, wanted to be one—until recently.  

What changed? I realized that no one refers to a male business leader as “boyboss.” Why? Because we are indoctrinated to think that a boss is always a man, rendering the term boyboss superfluous.  

In the same grain, I suspect that very few dads out there have ever been referred to as “working dads.” Yet we, even us in Lawyers Club, refer to moms as “working moms.”  

These terms, in my opinion, do nothing but perpetuate the false narrative that only men can be bosses while women stay home. A past board member once told me that, after attending several Lawyers Club programs with her, her son asked: “can boys also be lawyers?” One of the most powerful things about Lawyers Club is that we change that narrative. 

As we work to elevate our members to positions of power, we show our younger generation that it is not only possible, but it is the norm. We also need to normalize that although women may boss differently than men, we are just as powerful.
