March 8 was International Women’s Day. This week I want to recognize and acknowledge the heroism and bravery of the women and girls in Ukraine who are courageously fighting for their country and people – as soldiers, mothers, organizers, protesters, journalists, and refugee caretakers.

Ukrainian women from all occupations and backgrounds – including public officials and teachers – are joining the fight to defend their country. Kira Rudik, a member of the Ukrainian parliament, tweeted: “I planned to plant tulips and daffodils on my backyard today. Instead, I learn to fire arms and get ready for the next night of attacks on Kyiv.” Another woman said, "I was helping my husband to pack for a war... and then I thought 'OK, he's going to war. I'm going too.' So we are here together.” The New York Times published a video showing Ukrainian women holding firearms, a teacher and Ukrainian volunteer, in tears, as they waited to be deployed to defend Kyiv.

Other women are baking bread and compiling provisions for the soldiers, while doctors and nurses continue to provide essential services to their communities. Many women and girls now spend their days as refugees, having escaped to safety after being forced to spend nights in air-raid shelters.

My heart goes out to all of the people of Ukraine, and especially to Ukrainian women and children. I hope that history will acknowledge and reflect their resilience, courage, and contributions to the effort to stave off the invasion of their country. The world is watching. We see your heroism and bravery. We are inspired.
