Lawyers Club Blog (ARCHIVE)

Currently, of the 266 sculptures in the U.S. Capitol that commemorate notable historical figures, just 14 represent women. Bipartisan legislation approved by the House seeks to add statues of Justice Sandra Day O’Connor and Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg—the first and second women on the Supreme Court.

In 1981, O’Connor became the first woman nominated and confirmed to the U.S. Supreme Court. Lawyers Club was fortunate to feature O’Connor as our Annual Dinner Keynote speaker in 2014. Ginsberg, or the “Notorious R.B.G.,” nominated in 1993, was the second woman on the court.

Both O’Connor and Ginsberg are international feminist icons who fought tirelessly for abortion rights and gender equality.

The legislation is a step in the right direction towards acknowledging the important historical contributions of women.
