Adults spend an average of seven hours online per day, and teenagers can spend up to nine hours. Even subtracting schoolwork, homework, and communicating with their caregivers, teenagers spend a considerable part of their day in front of a screen, often unsupervised. Every. Single. Day.
Both organizations seek to support historically under-supported members of the legal community through insightful programming and meaningful networking opportunities, and advocate for progressive change to the legal profession.
Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, anti-Asian hate crimes increased by more than 73%, compared to hate crimes in general, which rose by 13%. Stop AAPI Hate, a national coalition that became the authority on gathering data on racially motivated attacks related to the pandemic, received 9,081 incident reports between March 19, 2020, and this June.
On December 17, 2021, the U.S. Senate confirmed the appointment of Judge Jinsook Ohta. This makes Judge Ohta the first Asian Pacific American female judge on the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of California.
Since the current system of appeals courts was formed in 1891, there have been approximately 806 federal appeals court judges. None have been Korean American women.
Burns realizes the importance of women and people of color seeing her in this role. Burns has said: “Dreams do come true, but not without the help of others, a good education, a strong work ethic, and the courage to lean in. That’s why I spend so much time with organizations that help minorities and women gain the education and self-respect they need to take risks, to dream big, and, I hope, to someday pay it forward.”
Yesterday, the Supreme Court heard oral arguments in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, which concerns a Mississippi law banning abortion after 15 weeks of pregnancy—the biggest threat to Roe v. Wade in the past 50 years. Roe and its progeny hold that a person’s right to end their pregnancy before viability is a rule of law and a component of liberty that cannot be renounced.
November 30, 2021, is GivingTuesday—an organized global network created to inspire generosity around the world through advocacy to support communities and causes. Every act of generosity counts.
We could not help but think how wonderful it was to be able to work with these women and also give them the opportunity to utilize their legal skills without jeopardizing other parts of their lives. I doubt this opportunity would have presented itself pre-pandemic.
I am saddened and frustrated to be writing yet again about another attack on women’s reproductive rights.
