Burns realizes the importance of women and people of color seeing her in this role. Burns has said: “Dreams do come true, but not without the help of others, a good education, a strong work ethic, and the courage to lean in. That’s why I spend so much time with organizations that help minorities and women gain the education and self-respect they need to take risks, to dream big, and, I hope, to someday pay it forward.”

Yesterday, the Supreme Court heard oral arguments in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, which concerns a Mississippi law banning abortion after 15 weeks of pregnancy—the biggest threat to Roe v. Wade in the past 50 years. During the early morning hours of June 28, 1968, New York City police raided the Stonewall Inn, a gay club in Greenwich Village in New York City. Officers forced customers and workers into police vehicles. Rather than dispersing the crowd as had occurred during past raids, those remaining starting cheering and the crowd mushroomed. According to several accounts, a clubgoer shouted at onlookers, “Why don’t you guys do something!” And they did. The Stonewall Riots, also called the Stonewall Uprising, sparked six days of protests and clashes with police officers. Leaders among this crowd included prominent trans women such as Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera. The Stonewall Riots served as a catalyst for the gay rights movement in the United States and around the world.

As I embark on the biggest leadership role of my career, I have been reflecting upon how I got here. Largely, I listened and followed the advice and counsel of numerous people who encouraged me along the way. Their advice included to join Lawyers Club of San Diego in order to gain leadership skills, volunteer my time to a mission about which I was passionate, and step outside my comfort zone. Those people—whether they know it or not—are my mentors, and I am grateful for their advice and encouragement.

One is inspired to rise beyond one’s self-imposed limitations to honor these traditions.

Best practices geared towards standardizing processes are more likely to be in place in evaluating candidates at the hiring stage, but these need to be expanded and entrenched later in the career cycle, when considering attorneys for assignments and promotions.

Since the outbreak of COVID-19, emerging data and reports from those on the front lines have shown that all types of violence against women and girls, and particularly domestic violence, have intensified. (United Nations Women: The Shadow Pandemic: Violence Against Women during COVID-19.)

Most of us in the legal community are privileged to be able to pivot during this pandemic to the new normal without knowing the despair of the women and girls in our community that are seeking assistance to survive domestic violence, sexual assault, violent crimes, torture, and retaliatory treatment for being in the transgender community.
